Hudson’s Vacation on display at the Detroit Historical Museum

DETROIT (WXYZ) – Visit the Detroit Historical Museum on Sunday in December and get free entry!

The free general admission offer is in honor of the museum’s new Hudson’s Holidays exhibit. It is visible until January 30, 2022.

Say the word “Hudson’s” and most Detroiters will be able to tell a story about visiting the stylish downtown department store or shopping at one of its suburban stores. Hudson’s Holidays will bring back the memories and magic of Hudson’s in pop-up displays throughout the museum, just in time for the holiday season.

Founded as a humble clothier for men and boys in 1881, the JL Hudson Company is said to have recorded an average of 100,000 sales per day in the 1950s, and its 25-story building was the tallest department store in the world until in 1961. Visitors will discover what made Hudson’s so popular, such as its wide selection of merchandise and its full-service approach, which goes beyond in-store restaurants, salons and alterations to offer amenities like a traveling library, a writing lounge and an in-house dry cleaner.

The exhibit will feature a selection of must-have items from the Detroit Historical Society‘s collection, including the toys and décor that made vacations at Hudson so magical, the clothes and accessories that made the store such a great shopping destination. year round and some artifacts from the downtown store that evokes the distinctive features of the massive building. Revisit traditions loved by generations of Detroiters, like seeing the world’s tallest flag, visiting Santa Claus in Toy Town, and shopping for deals in the basement store.
