New exhibit at Beltrami County Historical Museum shines a light on women in winter sports

The Beltrami County Historical Society’s first special exhibit of 2022 will feature female athletes in various individual and team winter sports.

The exhibit is open through mid-March and features hundreds of artifacts donated and loaned by female Beltrami County athletes and their families.

The exhibition highlights the contributions and achievements of women in a variety of sports, including basketball, biathlon, cheerleading, cross-country skiing, curling, alpine skiing, figure skating, fishing, hockey , Nordic skating, sled dog racing and speed skating.

“The women represented here include state record holders, world champions and Olympians – whose discipline, teamwork, experience and determination have not only won titles and accolades, but have also broke down barriers and laid the foundation for future female athletes, scholars and leaders in our community,” said Executive Director Emily Thabes.

“The artifacts share an evolving history of women’s sports from a variety of perspectives. We are honored to highlight the stories and accomplishments of these women in their respective fields.

A mini-exhibition is also presented at the Tourist Office today.

Sponsors of this exhibit include Sanford Bemidji Orthopedics & Sports Medicine, Women Anglers of Minnesota, and L&M Fleet Supply.
