“Boston” documentary brings historic events of past marathons to life – CBS Boston

BOSTON (CBS) – The documentary “Boston” captured the Boston Marathon story in under two hours and the director worked to provide as many factual events as possible.

“A lot of people know about the Boston Marathon. It is a legendary event. But I think fewer people probably know why he has that status and I think this movie tells that story, ”Boston director Jon Dunham said.

Dunham had planned to settle in Boston for more than 10 years, but the story took an abrupt turn with the attacks of 2013.

“I knew from the start that there was a balance to be struck, so that this didn’t turn into a bombing movie and that didn’t help either,” Dunham said.

In 2014, over 120 crew members with 56 cameras spread along the course to capture the indestructible heart and spirit of the Boston Marathon.

“Matt was absolutely wonderful. As well as being our first choice, he has a strong connection to the Boston Marathon, having grown up watching his father and brother run the Boston Marathon and we are so very grateful that he is a part of it, ”said Dunham.

“Gratitude is a recurring theme in ‘Boston,’ Boston Marathon Race Director Dave McGillivray said in the film.

He “never wants to lose sight of what this race means to so many people around the world.”

Filmmakers have traveled to Japan, Kenya, Greece and Australia to capture the prestige and appeal of the Boston Marathon around the world.

Dunham says it’s not just a runner’s movie.

“This is a film about the triumph of adversity,” he said. “These themes are universal, in-depth, finding courage and strength. And that theme really came to life here in Boston.

“Boston – The Documentary” is in theaters one night only on Wednesday, April 19.
