Brno, Aug 10 (BD) – The city of Brno will once again commemorate the historical events of 1645 this weekend, on the occasion of the traditional Brno Day.

The event will take place this weekend, August 12-14, organized by TIC BRNO in cooperation with the Bishopric of Brno, the 1645 Society and the Brno City Museum. The program includes a military parade through the town, a period program on Kraví hora and Špilberk Castle and a demonstration of the battle. The successful defense of 1645, led by Commander Raduit de Souches, is probably the most important event in Brno’s history and will be celebrated over three eventful days.

“This year, the event will also be extended to Špilberk Castle, where we are preparing medieval craft markets and a cultural program. History buffs and families with kids will have fun; the program on Kraví hora and Špilberk is also free,” said Brno Mayor Markéta Vaňková.

On the first day of the festival, Friday August 12, TIC BRNO organizes the popular underground tour “Black Ball for Torstenson” in the Labyrinth under Zelný trh. According to legend, the specially modified black ball was the only thing capable of killing Swedish General Torstenson. There are other legends connected with the Siege of Brno; the most famous explains why the noon bell in Brno still rings at 11 a.m. today, when the people of Brno rang the city bells at 11 a.m. to trick the Swedish army into breaking the noon deadline of their seat an hour earlier with typical Moravian ingenuity.

Saturday, August 13 will begin with an early morning parade of nearly 220 infantrymen marching from Denisové Sady through Náměstí Svobody to the Church of St. James, where a memorial ceremony in memory of Raduit de Souches will be held. Then the army will move to Kraví hora, which will be the center of the military-historical program until the evening. A vintage military camp will be set up throughout the day, where visitors can experience the authentic atmosphere of vintage camp life. The program will be completed by mounted falconers from the period of the Thirty Years’ War, a beautiful horse show by the Tvrz company. There will also be a fashion show of the period, concerts of medieval music, historical folk and the association of musical tradition with modern art performed by the rock group Clamortis.

“The main military-historical attraction will be the traditional combat demonstration, but this year it will take the form of animated scenes showing the key moments of the siege of Brno. The public will be able to attend the stage performance of Raduit de Souches and Father Martin Středy,” said Ondřej Anton of Compagnie 1645.

On Saturday and Sunday it is also possible to visit Špilberk Castle. “The castle program is this year’s novelty, which will delight the whole family,” said Jana Janulíková, director of TIC BRNO. “Treat yourself to a pleasant summer day at the castle with a traditional craft market and concerts of medieval music. On Saturdays, you can attend a play on the mythical hero Robin Hood or listen to baroque love tunes accompanied on the harpsichord by the vocal trio Drei Engel. Throughout the day, art workshops for children will be organized and the castle will also offer free entry to two exhibitions and the observation tower. Saturday will end at 9:30 p.m. with a silent baroque fireworks display.

The last day of Sunday will be devoted to the spiritual dimension of the festival. Photo credit: Michael Růžička / ICT BRNO

The Bishopric of Brno will hold a pontifical service in Petrov Cathedral, and a guided tour will be available of the Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary and the statue of Father Martin Středa. In the gardens under Petrov, families with children can experience the fairy tale of the theater Bajaja Víti Marčík.
