MARSHALL – Relive the days of Marshall’s historic railroads and trains as the Harrison County Historical Museum hosts its Journey Stories lunch and learning series today.
The presenter will be Daryl Ware, former conductor and board member of the {span} Texas & Pacific Museum, who is writing a book called “The History of the Railroad and Its People in Harrison County” .
“This is one of those unique opportunities,” Ware said of the special presenter. “I feel honored to be able to share the story of all these employees who have left.
“No one, to my knowledge, has ever recognized the railroad workers, as much as their trades that they all were able to offer the railroad, back in the shops, when the shops were at their peak, here. ,” he said. “It’s an honor. I think it will be a unique opportunity for me to present this.
The event will begin with a lunch at 11 a.m. at the Marshall Visual Art Center, 208 E. Burleson St. Boogie-woogie musician Benjamin Cohen will perform at 11:15 a.m. and the program will follow at 11:40 a.m.
“For the menu this time, Sweet Sabine found an 1800s Texas & Pacific dining car menu,” said Becky Palmer, assistant director of education for the museum.
Palmer said Juli Jameson, owner of Sweet Sabine’s, will be serving a selection of sandwiches from that menu, as well as a piece of homemade buttermilk pie that’s also on the menu.
“It’s pretty cool,” Palmer said. “Because they all used the same menu – and there are many (rail) lines that have used it – it’s called Mexico-St. Louis special, because the train was going from St. Louis, all the way to Mexico.
Palmer said he chose the boogie-woogie as a tribute to the importance of the musical genre in Harrison County railroad history, which dates back to the early 1870s, during the decade when Marshall became the headquarters of the Texas & Pacific Railway Co.
“It’s the (linked) railroad, and we’ve had some boogie-woogie here,” Palmer said.
At lunch, attendees will learn about Ware’s 10 years of research into the county’s rich railway history.
“I’m going to present the book, chapter by chapter, a kind of short summary of each chapter,” he said.
