Historic Events Scheduled in Madison County

Madison County Historian Matthew Urtz invites the public to a host of upcoming events – from tours of Utica’s historic shoe district to the Cottage Lawn Farmers’ Market.

• On Thursday, July 21 at 6:30 p.m., the Marshall Historical Society will host a presentation by Cheryl Pula on the 146th NYSV Infantry of the Civil War at Deansboro City Hall.

Pula, a prominent local author and military historian, will speak about the regiment, also known as the Fifth Oneida County Regiment, also nicknamed the Halleck Regiment, after Henry Halleck of Westernville. Halleck served as Lincoln’s chief of staff during the Civil War. There is no charge for this event. • On Friday, July 22 at 1:00 p.m., the Oneida Community Mansion House will take a two-part tour of Sherrill Manufacturing’s Mansion House and Liberty Tabletop Factory. The event offers a behind-the-scenes look at how silverware goes from metal coil to silverware and a tour of the Oneida Community Mansion House. The tour will begin at the Mansion House and participants will be responsible for heading to Sherrill Manufacturing after the first tour ends. Registration is $15 and must be done in advance. • On Sunday, July 24 at 2 p.m., the National Abolition Hall of Fame and Museum will host the presentation “Central New York Local History is National History” by Daniel Koch. Originally from Oneida, he is a historian, author and assistant teacher at Bedford School, a boarding and day school in England.

Koch completes a publication on the history of downtown New York. $5 admission includes Hall of Fame museum and program.
