Madison County Historical Events September 19-25 – Oneida Dispatch

The Madison County Historian’s Office announced the following events for September 19-25.

Beginning Tuesday, September 20 from 2-6 p.m., the Madison County Historical Society will host a biweekly Farmer’s Market. Discover fresh seasonal produce, local cheeses, honeycombs, artisan breads, pastries, baked goods, maple products, poultry, lamb, eggs, wool and wool, jams and jellies, soaps and other products. On Tuesday, September 20 at 7 p.m., the Cazenovia Public Library, 100 Albany St., Cazenovia, will host a special presentation sponsored by the American Legion Post #88 on the Moores of Fort Benning by local historian Frank Stritter.

General Hal Moore was one of the most notable military leaders of the Vietnam War. His wife, Julie, was an extraordinary leader who helped care for military families. On Wednesday, September 21 at 5:30 p.m., the Rome Historical Society, 200 Church St., Rome, will host “CNY Hops, Birth, Death and Rebirth of an Agricultural Industry” by Madison County Historian Matthew Urtz. Urtz will discuss the culture’s growth, why it has flourished and failed, and how it has been reborn in the 21st century. There is no charge for this event. On Friday, September 23 at 6 p.m., the Morrisville Public Library, 83 E Main St, Morrisville, will host local author and railroad historian John Taibi. Taibi will organize a trip from Morrisville Station to Norwich and Lyon Brook Bridge along the old Ontario & Western Railway. Free entry. For more information, call 315-684-9130.

On Saturday, September 24 beginning at 10:00 a.m., Mount Pleasant Cemetery, Cemetery Drive, Canastota, will host a special cemetery tour featuring select cemetery residents. Participants will hear the history of the cemetery told by guides and will stop occasionally to hear the stories of some of the cemetery’s longtime residents.

Visits will begin at 10 a.m., 10:30 a.m., 11 a.m. and 11:30 a.m. Tours last 60 minutes. Admission is $5 for adults, children 12 and under are free. All proceeds will go to the Mount Pleasant Cemetery Association, the Canastota Canal-Town Museum and the Canastota Public Library. For more information, call Matthew Urtz at 315-366-2453.

On Saturday, September 24 at 7 p.m., the Oneida Community Mansion House, 170 Kenwood Ave., Oneida, will host a special concert with local artists Mike Powell and Loren Barrigar at the Big Hall. On Sunday, September 25, the Madison County Historical Society, 435 Main St., Oneida, will host a Penny Rug Workshop. Learn how to make a Penny Holiday rug ornament with rug maker Sandy Rolewicz.

The event will take place at 435 Main St. in Oneida. The cost of the workshop is $25 for society members and $30 for non-members. Become a member of the society to benefit from the special price of the workshop.
