Japanese Ambassador Koji Haneda and Consul General Yoshiaki Miwa attended the groundbreaking ceremony celebrating the completion of the renovation and improvement of the Philippine-Japanese Historical Museum on January 23. .
The Calinan Museum in Davao City opened in 1994 through the efforts of Philippine Nikkei Jin Kai, Inc. (PNJK). Its exhibits allow visitors to learn about the historical relationship between Japan and Davao, which began with the arrival of the first Japanese immigrants to the city in the 1900s. In order to commemorate its 25th anniversary, efforts to renovate and upgrade in value have been initiated. The grant supported the renovation of exhibition space and materials, as well as the installation of digital devices to further enrich the learning experience for visitors.
Ambassador Haneda delivered a congratulatory speech during the ceremony, and the event was livened up with various activities. There was the unveiling of a new sign, the cutting of the ribbon and the breaking of the sake barrel called “Kagamibiraki” in Japanese. Children from the Philippine Nikkei Jin Kai International School also performed a song and dance number.
