FRANKLIN — Author and historian Stephen Puleo visits the Franklin Historical Museum Oct. 10 to discuss his book, “Voyage of Mercy,” recounting the first U.S. humanitarian mission sent to aid starving Ireland during the potato famine of the United States. 1840s.

Published by St. Martin’s Press in 2020, “Voyage of Mercy: The USS Jamestown, the Irish Famine, and the Remarkable Story of America’s First Humanitarian Mission” tells how thousands of ships sailed from Ireland in the late 1840s, ferrying the hungry and destitute away from their homeland. The first to sail the other way was the USS Jamestown, a converted warship stripped of its guns and engaged in the peaceful delivery of food, clothing and supplies.

The Wall Street Journal called Puleo’s book “[A] well-researched and beautifully written chronicle of the Jamestown, its captain and an Irish priest who cared for the starving in Cork City… The story of Puleo, despite the hardships ahead, is surely a tribute to the better angels of American nature, and in that sense, it couldn’t be more timely.

A former journalist, Puleo’s other books include: “American Treasures: The Secret Efforts to Save the Declaration of Independence, the Constitution, and the Gettysburg Address (2016)”; “The Caning: The Assault That Led America to Civil War” (2012); “A City So Great: The Rise of an American Metropolis, Boston 1850-1900” (2010); “Boston’s Italians: A History of Pride, Perseverance, and Paesani, from the Great Immigration Years to the Present” (2007); “Due to Enemy Action: The True Story of WWII’s USS Eagle 56” (2005); and “Dark Tide: The Great Boston Molasses Flood of 1919” (2003).

The Oct. 10 event is part of the museum’s second Sunday Lecture Series and is sponsored by the Friends of the Franklin Historical Museum. Door open at 1 p.m. and the presentation will start at 1:15 p.m.
