It’s almost there, season six of Outlander is just under two weeks away from hitting our screens.
We know that Claire, Jamie and the Fraser’s Ridge family will face not only the threat of the coming Revolutionary War, but also the arrival of new faces (enter the Christie family) and persistent enemies.
But do we know what year the new season of the hugely popular historical drama will be set in?
Ever since Jamie (Sam Heughan) and Claire Fraser (Caitriona Balfe) arrived in the colonies, the formation of what would become the United States of America has begun to take shape.
So far, Jamie has stuck to the side of the Brits but this new season will force him to face the fight for the future and if he wants to stay on the losing side.
What year does Outlander season 6 take place?
So far, each of the seasons has corresponded fairly roughly to the corresponding book number (although parts can be pulled from several books at once), which means that season six is set on the events of A Breath Of Snow And Ashes (ABOSAA).
The sixth in Diana Gabaldon’s series of epic books is set in the colony of North Carolina from early 1773 to late 1776.
What major historical events will it cover?
We know that in the past the showrunners and Diana have been quick to include major historical events and figures, which means we might see some of them this season.
One that has appeared in teasers before is the Boston Tea Party, when armed protesters against the British Tea Act dressed up as Native Americans and boarded the ships dumping tea into the harbor, which Claire talks about in the newspaper.
Set in 1773, it’s safe to assume the timing of the new season will match.
It’s also likely that we’ll see the fallout of the “shot heard all over the world” as the first shots of the Revolutionary War were fired at Lexington and Concord in Massachusetts in 1775.
This is strongly suggested by ABOSAA’s description which states: “The long fuse of rebellion has already been lit. Men lie dead in the streets of Boston, and in the backwoods of North Carolina, lonely cabins burn in the forest.”
So maybe it’s time to buckle up as Clan Fraser’s Ridge are kicked and screamed into another famous war they can’t escape.
But as Roger says in the last clip of season 6: “If America doesn’t become America, who knows what this world will be like?”
